How to choose a domain name for your business - guide

TL;DR

Pick a short, memorable domain - ideally your brand name. For Bulgarian business: .bg (~15 EUR/year). For international: .com (~10 EUR/year). Register it in your own name, not the developer's. Turn on auto-renewal. Avoid hyphens, numbers and hard-to-spell transliterations. If your first choice is taken, try variations or a different extension before buying from a reseller.

You have a business idea, you are ready to build a website, and the first thing you need is a domain - your address on the internet. It sounds simple, but the wrong choice can cost you months of brand confusion later. A domain is one of the few things that is genuinely hard to change once people start using it. Your logo, your design, even your platform - all of those can be swapped. Your domain sticks.

The domain market (Verisign, Q1 2026)

392.5 million domain names are registered worldwide

The good names go fast - .com and .net alone account for 173.5 million of them (Verisign, Q4 2025). If you have a good domain idea, do not sit on it.

Why your domain matters

Before we get into the practical tips, let us clarify what a domain actually is. A domain name is the address people type in the browser to reach your website - for example, codingturtles.com. Think of it like the address of your physical store, but online. Without it, people cannot find you.

Your domain is your first impression. When someone sees your website address on a business card, in a Google result, or in a social media link, they form an opinion before they even click. A clean, professional domain builds trust. A long, confusing one raises doubts.

  • Hard to change later. Your logo can be redesigned in a week. Your domain is printed on every card, linked from every directory, and indexed by Google. Changing it means starting over.
  • Affects brand recognition. People remember domains. If yours is short and clear, they will type it directly. If it is confusing, they will just google your brand name and hope for the best.
  • Plays a role in trust and SEO. Google does not rank you higher just because of a clever domain, but a trustworthy-looking address gets more clicks in search results. And more clicks means better rankings over time.

.bg, .com or something else?

The part after the dot (called a TLD - top-level domain) matters more than most people think. It tells your visitors something about who you are before they even see your site.

.comInternational, universal10-15 EUR High

Choose .bg when:

  • Your customers are in Bulgaria
  • You want to signal "local business"
  • Trust is important (services, health, legal)

Choose .com when:

  • You plan to sell internationally
  • Your brand name works globally
  • The .bg version is taken

Our recommendation: If your business is in Bulgaria, start with .bg. If you can afford it, register .com too and redirect it to your .bg site. That way, nobody else takes it and you are covered if you go international later.

A note on newer TLDs like .shop, .store or .tech: they are cheaper, but people are less used to them. A customer might not trust "tvoiatmagazin.shop" as much as "tvoiatmagazin.bg". They are fine for side projects or landing pages, but for your main business domain, stick with .bg or .com.

Short, memorable, easy to spell

The top 100 websites in the world have domains averaging just 6.2 characters (DomainDetails, 2025). You do not need to be that short, but the principle is clear: shorter is better. Most successful sites have domains between 6 and 14 characters.

Good examples

  • domklima.bg - short, clear, brand name
  • freshbox.bg - memorable, easy to say
  • moiautomobil.bg - clear meaning, one word

Bad examples

  • ivan-petrov-uslugi-2024.bg - too long, has a year
  • sht-service.com - "sht" is hard to spell and say
  • best-evtini-mebeli-sofia.bg - keyword spam, not a brand
The phone test

Say your domain out loud to someone on the phone. If you have to spell it letter by letter, it is too complicated. "Go to freshbox.bg" works. "Go to f-r-e-s-h-hyphen-b-o-x-24.com" does not.

Practical rules

  • -Keep it to 2-3 words maximum, ideally your brand name
  • -Avoid hyphens - people forget them and type the version without
  • -Avoid numbers unless they are part of your brand (like 7-Eleven)
  • -Watch out for transliteration problems: "щ" becomes "sht", "ж" becomes "zh" - both are awkward in a domain
  • -If your brand has a hard-to-transliterate name, consider a simpler version for the domain

Keywords in the domain - yes or no?

In the early days of SEO, having your keyword in the domain was a big deal. A site called "evtini-mebeli.bg" would rank high just because of the domain name. Google put an end to that in 2012 with the Exact Match Domain (EMD) Update.

Today, the picture is more nuanced. EMDs are not dead, but they do not give you a free pass anymore. Research from SEO Examples (2025) shows that EMDs still appear disproportionately in Google's top 10, but only when backed by quality content. Without it, they perform no better than any other domain.

Brand name domain

Example: lenda.com

  • Memorable and trustworthy
  • Builds long-term brand
  • Works across all marketing channels

Keyword domain

Example: cheaploans.com

  • Can look spammy
  • Hard to build a brand around
  • Small SEO edge, but fading

The bottom line: Pick a brand name, not a keyword string. The exception is when your brand IS the keyword naturally - if your flower shop is called "FlowerShop", that is perfectly fine. But "best-evtini-cvqtia-sofia-dostavka.bg" is not a brand, it is a sentence.

Where to register your domain

Where you register depends mostly on which extension you want. For .bg domains, you need a Bulgarian registrar. For .com, you have plenty of international options.

For .bg domains

  • SuperHosting.BG - the largest Bulgarian hosting provider
  • ICDSoft - reliable, based in Sofia
  • Jump.bg - another solid option
  • Register.BG - the official .bg registry itself

For .com domains

  • Namecheap - affordable, good interface
  • Cloudflare Registrar - at-cost pricing, no markup
  • Porkbun - low prices, free WHOIS privacy

Own your domain yourself

We always advise our clients to register the domain in their own name. We have seen cases where businesses lose their domain because it was registered under a previous agency. If the agency disappears or the relationship goes bad, you could lose your web address. Register it yourself, then give your developer access to the DNS settings.

Things to check before registering

  • Auto-renewal. Turn it on. Domains expire and if you forget to renew, someone else can grab it within hours.
  • WHOIS privacy. Some registrars offer it for free (Cloudflare, Namecheap). It hides your personal info from public domain records.
  • DNS management. Make sure the registrar gives you full control over your DNS records. You will need this to connect the domain to your hosting.

The domain is taken - what now?

With 392 million domains already registered worldwide, there is a good chance your first choice is taken. You have a few options:

1

Check if it is actually in use

Open the domain in the browser. If it shows a real website, it is taken. If it shows "domain for sale" or a parked page with ads, the owner might be open to selling, but usually wants far more than the domain is worth.

2

Try variations

Add "bg" (freshboxbg.com), change the extension (.com instead of .bg or vice versa), or try a slightly different word. But do not drift too far from the original idea.

3

Consider a new name

Sometimes it is better to come up with a new brand name than to fight for a taken domain. A new, unique name can be more memorable than a compromised version of the original.

Do not compromise on a confusing domain. It is tempting to add hyphens, numbers or extra words just to get something available. But a confusing domain will cost you more in lost traffic and brand confusion than taking the time to find a clean alternative.

Common domain mistakes

We have seen these mistakes repeatedly with clients who come to us for a new website. Most of them are easy to avoid if you know what to watch out for:

Too long domain

Over 15-20 characters becomes hard to remember and type. Every extra character increases the chance of a typo.

Hard to pronounce or spell

If people cannot say it out loud without hesitation, they will have trouble typing it too. Transliteration of Bulgarian words like "shtastie" or "druzhestvo" is not intuitive.

The domain is not in your name

Registered under an agency, friend or developer. If the relationship goes bad, you risk losing the domain. Always register in your own name or your company name.

Forgotten renewal

Domains renew annually. If you miss it, the domain can be snatched by specialized bots within seconds. Turn on auto-renewal.

Registering only one extension

If you have brandname.bg but not brandname.com, a competitor or spammer can take the other. For 10-15 EUR a year you protect your brand.

Once you have the right domain, the next step is choosing the right agency to build your site. Our guide on how to choose a web agency covers what to look for and what to ask.

Checklist before buying a domain

Before you click "Register", run through this list. It takes five minutes and can save you from an expensive mistake:

Frequently asked questions

A .bg domain costs around 13-18 EUR per year depending on the registrar. SuperHosting.BG and ICDSoft offer prices in this range. Registration is for a minimum of 1 year and renews annually.

Not necessarily. Since 2023, individuals from the EU can also register .bg domains. Previously a Bulgarian company ID (EIK or BULSTAT) was required. If you have a registered company, the process is more straightforward.

For a business targeting mainly Bulgarian customers, .bg is the better choice - it signals a local business and builds trust. If you plan to sell internationally, .com is more universal. Ideally, register both and redirect one to the other.

The domain itself has little direct impact on SEO. Google cares about content, not the name. But a good domain helps indirectly - people remember it, click on it more easily and share it. Keywords in the domain do not give a significant advantage since the Google EMD Update in 2012.

First check if it is actually in use or just parked. Try variations - add "bg" or change the extension (.com instead of .bg). Domain brokers are an option but usually not worth it for a small business. Do not pick a confusing domain just because the ideal one is taken - better to come up with a new one.
