EcoHunt is an innovative project with the goal of making environmental care accessible and fun. Instead of boring campaigns, the app turns street cleanups into a game - with missions, points, and leaderboards that motivate users to actively take part.

User profiles

Every user has their own profile with stats on points earned, missions completed, and achievements.

Cleanup missions

The system generates missions to collect different types of waste - plastic, paper, glass, and more. Each mission has a description and a point value.

Photos as proof

Users photograph themselves disposing of trash in a bin. The photo is uploaded and points are added to the profile.

Leaderboards

A global and local leaderboard shows the most active participants. This creates healthy competition and drives more activity.

Social feed

Users see what others are doing - who completed which missions and who posted new achievements.

Profile interaction

You can follow other users, like their achievements, and send congratulations.

The idea behind EcoHunt was ambitious - to build an app that:

Motivates people to act

Environmental initiatives often go unnoticed. We had to build a system that makes participation fun and rewarding.

Social interaction

People want to share their achievements and compete with friends. The app needed social-network elements.

The app had to work on both Android and iOS without writing two separate versions.

We worked closely with the EcoHunt design team to create an app that's both functional and visually appealing:

React Native for cross-platform development

We chose React Native to build one app that works on both Android and iOS. That saved time and resources while keeping the user experience at a high level.

Mission and points system

Every user has missions - find and dispose of a specific type of trash. They photograph the trash, upload the picture, and earn points. Different waste types are worth different amounts.

Social features

Users have profiles, can follow other participants, see leaderboards, and interact with each other. This creates a community of people who care about the environment.

EcoHunt was already started by another, less experienced team before it reached us. The real challenge was not inventing the idea - it was cleaning up an inherited codebase and getting a complex social app published on both Google Play and the App Store.

Cleaned up inherited code

The code was written by an inexperienced team. We reorganized the codebase to remove problems and make future work faster - and mentored the developers already on the project along the way.

Built the social layer correctly

A full social network like Instagram: feed, friends, posts, follow, add friends, block, and report. The relations between users are complex to build right - and we did.

Fixed the builds and published

Because the project was started by others, the native packages were a mess and normal Android and iOS builds were hard to produce. We untangled them, made user photos secure and properly deletable, and got the app live on both stores.
